Flying Dutchman, 1974,

  • Los Altos, California

The FD was the Olympic double handed dinghy for over 3 decades.

  • In competent hands it will still blow away most of the competition.
  • Due to its almost 20 ft. length it is roomy as well, and good for larger sailors.

US1359 is a 1974 Hein 1-1/2 bottom cold molded FD which was originally built for Dennis Surtees.

  • It sailed in the '76 Montreal Olympics as the US team boat with Freeman/Mathias aboard where they placed 6th.

This boat was fully restored in 2008, stored indoors and has seen only fresh water use on Lake Tahoe for the last 2 summers.

  • New deck and under structure, (mostly) new hardware - all Harken, 2 part poly on hull and a brand new custom built trailer.
  • I have lots of detailed pics of the restoration which can be provided on request.
  • 2 masts (SuperSpar and Needlespar) and a spare boom. 2 sets of older sails. Generally updated to mid '90's technology.
  • Needs only a spinnaker sock, all launching hardware (Spiro, etc.) is present and functional.
  • Buy a set of new sails and race it in the FD Worlds this Sept in Santa Cruz, CA.
  • A classic wood hot rod with lots of fun left in it.
