I have for your purchasing pleasure a 1994 MacGregor 19 for $6,500. It was the precursor to the MacGregor 26X and 26M. This is the boat you've been waiting for (translation - the one your wife will actually be willing to go out on). It is easily trailered to the sailing destination of choice, because it has a water ballast that can be emptied to cut down on weight. This also allows it to plane like a power boat when you use it's 40hp outboard engine. Fill up the ballast and put down the swing keel, and you have a capable sailboat. With the keel up, you can run right up on the beach (try that with traditional sailboats and you'll regret it). For safety, it has foam in the hull to make it float, even if it gets filled with water. The cabin has four berths and an enclosed head; I have made great memories camping on it with my wife and three small children multiple times. You won't find another boat this length and price with such nice accommodations and interior space.
