Professionally designed by Cortland Steck, NA and built out by the owner and JSI (now Island Nautical) in St. Petersburg, this unique and well-appointed twin keeler features 6' standing headroom, dockside AC and an enclosed head.

Sails and Rig
This model Westerly was known to be somewhat under-canvassed and have a tendency to carry too much weather helm. The fore-triangle has been increased by the addition of a bowsprit to mount a new 130% roller furling Genoa. The mast's original baby stay is no longer needed as the shroud chain plates were relocated 8" aft to allow for a more modern swept-back spreader configuration. The original spreaders were also replaced and now carry signal halyards on both sides. The new rig is termed a "Slutter" (combo Sloop and Cutter) rig, as she now carries a lapper sized, removable inner-foresail on a soft-luff furler that sheets to new tracks installed more inboard and on the coach roof. This smaller jib is used in higher wind conditions and the larger Genoa is left roller-furled. In lighter air, the smaller jib's tack can be released and moved aft to allow the full Genoa to tack easily...or the smaller sail can be removed entirely and stowed below decks. The more inboard sheeting for the Lapper allows a much improved pointing ability which is also enhanced by the newly shaped keel profiles. The foil shaped aluminum rudder, being moved aft to a transom mount, is also more sensitive and contributes to higher pointing ability. The helm "feel" now is almost completely neutral.
All sails new in 2013 and built by Schuur Sails in Pensacola, Florida, USA
Loose-footed main is stagger-battened and carries the Westerly symbol and original sail number. Main has two reefing points for conventional slab reefing which can be done entirely from the cockpit.
130 Genoa has padded luff and tell-tails mounted to a Schaffer "Snap-Furl" roller reefing/furling headstay. Sun covers are Cadet Grey Sunbrella fabric.
Lapper inner foresail is a 110%, also with matching sun cover. It is a soft luff model and can be furled, but not reefed down. It uses a smaller Schaffer furler.
Inner drifter sail is light air nylon spinnaker material that slides over the furled inner foresail's luff. It was constructed by the owner from a Sail-Rite designed kit. Used only in downwind conditions in light air.
Ladyship carries 2 adjustable whisker poles. One is light weight for hand-held use in very light air. The large one is heavier and can be mast secured to a ring on a mast track and supported by a topping lift for normal downwind use.
A hard-frame dodger with windows uses a removable canvas "connector" panel to completely cover the cockpit area running from the dodger back to the front edge of the arch assembly. All exterior canvas is matching Cadet Grey Sunbrella fabric.
Winch covers, mainsail cover and teak handrail covers are also provided.
A soft main hatch closer made of Sunbrella is used for convenience when the heavier 3-part teak washboards are not needed.
Mosquito screens and no-see-um netting closures are provide for all hatches and openings.
Winches and Sail Controls
Sail controls, including reefing, are led back to the cockpit and secured by multiple Lewmar rope clutches mounted adjacent to the main hatch. 2 smaller single speed Lewmar winches are mounted behind the clutch groups. New turning blocks and deck organizer blocks take the lines from the mast base back aft and are color coded.
The main sail is sheeted to a traveller mount (Harken Hardware) on the top surface of the arch assembly. The traveller and main control lines are led via blocks down the sides of the arch structure to cam cleats where they can be used from the cockpit's either side.
Larger 2-speed self-tailing Lewmar cockpit winches are mounted on the cockpit rail comings for use with the Genoa sheets. All deck sheeting tracks and cars have been replaced with new.
All running rigging is new, including new vinyl covered wire lifelines secured with pelican fittings.
Boom is supported by a "Boom-Kicker" and has an adjustable soft vang led back to cockpit.
A Lazy-Jack system for the main sail is installed.
Aluminum Stern Arch assembly
This addition to the re-fit is of such primary importance and multi-functional use, that a separate description is warranted. The arch assembly is constructed of TIG welded schedule 40 structural aluminum tubing and is designed and attached to the boat's hull structure as a full structural component intended to take the backstay rig loading imposed and the other loads it supports. It is not just cosmetic and is integral to the over-all design changes made in the re-fit. It is covered on top with a sheet of aluminum to provide shelter and sun protection.
It serves to anchor the split backstay attachments for the mast.
It carries two 100 watt solar panels for power generation.
It mounts two LED cockpit lights for general illumination.
It carries the internal wiring for the VHF radio antenna mounted on top with a collapsing mount to lay it down for trailering.
It carries the Aqua Signal series 40 stern light (LED light engine) in an elevated more visible position.
It carries the hard canister container for the Life-Sling MOB system.
It is built with an integral mount for the mast support system for trailering.
It carries the stern anchor storage tube and anchor.
It mounts the lifting tackle for the OB motor to enable the motor to be lifted clear of it's well for service.
It carries a swivel mount to carry the smaller auxiliary OB that is used with the inflatable tender.
The mainsail's sheeting point controls and traveller track are mounted on top of the arch structure.
This Westerly originally had a single cylinder inboard diesel when built. The original engine had been removed before we acquired it. We decided to re-power the boat with an outboard 4-stroke engine mounted in a well in the stern of the cockpit. The motor used was new model Tohatsu 20hp 4-stroke with a short shaft and electric start. This engine conversion/install process involved the complete re-build of the aft section of the cockpit and the re-location of the original rudder and tiller controls. The new stern section is constructed of marine plywood covered with fiberglass cloth and epoxy resins. It consists of 3 sections, with the center section being the motor well and the side sections devoted to an internal 18 gallon gas tank with deck fill and a storage locker on the opposite side. The side sections also serve to mount a pair of elevated, removable seats that allow full visibility forward and are under the arch for protection.
The motor well is unique, in that it mounts the motor on a track that can elevate the motor and prop completely clear of the water when under sail. The motor is lifted and lowered by a 12v internal winch powered by the motor's starting battery and controlled by a switch in the cockpit. The motor is equipped with a 4-bladed Hi-thrust prop protected by a surrounding circular ring/shroud. This prop ring serves to push open a pair of spring-loaded “bomb-bay” type doors when the motor is lowered and the doors close up as the motor is raised to provide a smooth surface for less drag when under sail. The motor well is "wet" all the time and the cockpit floor drains into it.
This size motor was chosen for having a larger alternator for power generation and lower operating stress when in use. It will push the boat up to designed hull speed using only half throttle at about 3000 rpm.
A Standard Horizon 1010i color plotter/GPS/wi-fi multi-function unit is mounted on a swing mount that can place it in the main hatch opening when in use under sail.
A Standard Horizon commercial VHF is installed.
AIS active units are by Si-Tex and are integrated into the plotter.
Ritchie bulkhead mounted compass with internal LED night lighting.
Raymarine thru-hull mounted transducer supplies log, depth and temp data via NEMA 2000 canbus integration.
Raymarine wind speed and direction from masthead unit.
Cockpit has bulkhead mounted Raymarine color multi-function display that can display all instrument data inputs.
Safety and Docking

All navigation lights are LED based. The masthead unit is a Tricolor topped with an anchor light.
Galley & Interior Equipage
Head is in a separate enclosed area adjacent to v-berth door. It is a self-contained SeaLand unit with an integral 8-gallon holding tank and low-profile real china bowl. It has a deck pump-out fitting and a Y valve that allows it to be discharged via a Marelon sea-cock in the hull where that is legal. The over-board discharge is powered by a 12v diaphragm waste pump. Ball valve direct flush and is automatically rinsed by pressure fresh water when flushed.
Freshwater tank is original stainless steel with deck fill and vent. It is mounted under the V-berth area and holds about 18 gallons. It now has a new removable top access port for cleaning and inspection. It is now 12v pump-powered and provides pressure cold water to single galley sink fixture and another hose bib faucet mounted in the cockpit well. No pressure-fed hot water.
Galley includes a new stainless steel bar-style deep single sink with single pressure fresh water fixture. Overboard gravity sink drain via Marelon seacock. Galley counter top and surround is new Corian material. Stove is new double burner alcohol (not pressurized) by Origo in gimbal mounts.
Refrigeration is a new Engel MB-40 fridge/freezer that runs on both shore power and 12v. It is mounted in a built-in recess adjacent the galley in the front section of the old pilot berth there...berth back section now just used for storage.
Both sides of the Saloon and under the galley area have integral storage areas accessed by sliding smoke-grey plexiglass panels.
Three cigarette lighter style 12v power sockets are provided and one USB style charging station with two stations is installed.
All interior 4" cushions are new marine closed-cell foam and covered with grey Sunbrella fabric with red piping. Matching cushions are also provided for the cockpit seats.
Entertainment is a Tivoli Audio bookshelf stereo system (12v) that contains an AM/FM radio and a CD player. Also included is an XM/SIRIUS radio receiver hooked up to it.
The above mentioned Standard Horizon 1010i Plotter also has the capability of wi-fi internet access and the ability to display both video and still photos from an SD card input. The wi-fi range has been enhanced by the addition of a range extender powered amplifier.
A 12v fan is mounted in the V-berth area as is a solar powered vent in the overhead hatch there.
The galley, v-berth and starboard aft locker all have GFI protected 110ac outlets powered by either the inverter or shore power.
Weems and Plath matching wall mounted clock and barometer.
Overhead light fixture by AlpineGlow in Saloon is powered by internal LEDs that have both red night lighting and warm white regular diffused lighting.
There are 6 more warm-white LED task light fixtures mounted inside the living areas in strategic places...some fixed and some clamp mounted that can be positioned as needed. All are 12v powered and individually switched.
Saloon has added overhead teak hand-rails on both sides.
V-berth has bulkhead mounted mirror in teak frame.
Custom built (J.O. Woodworks) galley table folds via recessed hinges to be either a bunk surface when lowered or size selectable eating surface when raised. It is mounted on a telescopic floor base and also attached to the center column hand-hold support used in the Westerly Saloons in both the Pageant and Centaur models. Fitted matching cushions cover it when lowered to make a double bunk. The starboard pilot berth is used for the cushion storage and other storage purposes.
Grey commercial-grade short-loop fitted carpeting is used throughout the inside sole areas and both pilot berths.
Saloon has custom sliding privacy curtains over all ports.
Interior paint is semi-gloss white single-part epoxy with insulating micro-beads mixed in to help prevent condensation. No overhead liner is used.
Bilges and internal stowage areas are painted with light beige 2-part epoxy garage floor paint.
Marine water-source air-conditioning is provide by a 12,000 btu Mermaid unit with a venturi suction device on the discharge water line to expel condensate water. The boat maintains a dry bilge area under normal conditions.
The AC is ducted into the Saloon and also to an outlet forward in the V-berth. The AC is for dockside shore power use only, as the boat does not carry a gen-set. The cooling water pump is self priming and the intake side uses a raw water strainer and a Marelon sea-cock.
Wiring and Electric service
The boat was completely re-wired for both 12vDC house usage and shore power. The shore power enters through a 30amp skin fitting aft equipped with a DEI isolation device on the ground wire. The shore power supplies a MagneSine pure sine-wave inverter/charger that charges the battery banks and also serves to supply inverter AC to the interior 110ac outlets underway when needed.
The starting battery is a larger motorcycle sized AGM battery that is connected directly to the outboard motor's cables. The OB's 15 amp alternator then charges this battery when running and when full, the excess power is then sent by a Balmar DuoCharge unit on to the house bank.
The house bank consists of a pair of conventional flooded chemistry golf cart batteries (GC-12s) wired in parallel. The AH capacity is 360AH, not counting the reserve in the isolated starting battery. The house bank is mounted low and amidships in a vented locker space and is secured from movement.
A conventional rotary main switch is used to isolate the battery banks, shut them off or combine them. A single on-off key switch powers up the main DC breaker panel through the DC-DC converter.
A custom built BlueSeas integrated breaker panel is used for both the AC and DC circuits. The DC panel circuits are further protected by a DC-DC converter that feeds them exactly 12v to all sensitive DC circuits regardless of voltage spikes/variations that could damage the LEDs and sensitive electronics.
The Magnesine inverter/charger unit has it's own remote controller for battery charging parameters and monitoring and is used only for the house bank and has an internal transfer switch to automatically connect the shore power to the 110v AC circuits in the boat.
The two 100 watt arch-mounted solar panels are by GRAPE solar and are fed through a BlueSky MPPT solar controller on the way to supply the house bank.
Back-lit digital meters provide visual monitoring of both AC and DC circuits.
All wiring is marine grade and fused or breaker protected per ABYC standards.
A 50' marine grade shoreside supply cable for 30 amp service is provided.
Exterior and Misc
The cast iron keels were dropped, inspected and then re-bedded in 3m 5200. All keels bolts were found to be sound. Keels were then re-shaped, faired out with epoxy primer and the interior cavities were treated for rust inhibition and then filled up completely with a slurry of blasting sand and slow cure epoxy resin.
The hull has no core and was filled in and faired out and then primed with 2-part epoxy primer before painting with Interlux Bright Sides polyurethane enamel finished with a clear epoxy overcoat. Colorful paint job was done by Bill Barnhart, a fine artist from Mesa, AZ.
Bottom paint is by E-paint and is a hard anti-fouling formula that is copper free and does not lose it's effectiveness when in storage on the trailer.
Foredeck is the only part of the boat that has a balsa core and was inspected and found to be sound when new parts were mounted there.
No osmotic blistering was found in the hull structure before paint prep.
White topsides paint is single part sprayed polyurethane over sanded and filled original gelcoat. Horizontal walking surfaces on deck are finished with "Kiwi-Grip" textured non-skid material.
