Prompte at Portsmouth March 1794

My Lord,

I beg leave with the greatest respect, to address you in behalf of myself who have been twenty years in the Navy, and nearly 12 years a Lieutenant. - In the last War while I belonged to His Majesty's Ship the Crescent, commanded by Captain Thos. Pakenham, I was with six others blown up in one of her Prizes called the Pilot, - three of the six did not survive the event, and myself narrowly escaped with my life, and bear the marks of having received material injury. - I was afterwards captured in the Crescent after her action with the --- a Dutch Frigate. I am now first Lieut. of H.M.S. La Prompte.

On Capt. Bligh being appointed to the Command of the Providence, I had the honor to be nominated his First Lieutenant, and on my anxious endeavours and service to give his orders their full effect, and studiously attentive to them to secure the good of the service we were on; which he has signified gave him satisfaction, I now most earnestly lay my case before your Lordship and intreat your justness and goodness to give me that mark of your Lordship's approbation and reward, which Lieut. Portlock has been honored with, by promotion. I am My Lord with the greatest respect Most obedient and

Most humble servant

My Lord,
A short time since I had the honor of writing to your Lordship a Memorial setting forth my servitude in H.M. Navy with the particulars of a misfortune which attended me during the last war, and which I trusted would have some weight were your Lordship fully acquainted with my sufferings. But' fearing my petition was never submitted for your Lordships perusal, I have with the greatest respect, presumed the liberty of addressing you a second time, in behalf of myself, who have been twenty years in the Navy, and twelve years a Lieutenant. In the last war, while I belonged to H.M.S. the Crescent, then commanded by Capt. Charles Hope I was with five others blown up in one of her prizes called the Pilot, - three of the six did not survive the event, and myself narrowly escaped with life, but not without bearing the marks of having received material injury. I was afterwards captured in the Crescent subsequent to her action with the Breill a Dutch frigate; and am now first Lieutenant of H.M.S. La Prompte. On Capt. Bligh being appointed to Command the Providence I had the honor to be nominated his first Lieutenant.
