A PV panel and charger keeps the batteries topped up.
There are two problem areas with the boat:
There is moisture in the deck and cabintop. Cape Dory unfortunately didn't seal hardware bolted through the deck to protect the coring, so almost all of these beautiful boats have this issue. The decks feel good underfoot. The issue is covered thoroughly in the survey.
The 24hp Farryman diesel started and ran as of October 2010, when it was winterized. The propeller shaft was removed from the boat due to the stuffing box, drive-saver, and a motor mount being in poor condition. I installed a reliable Yamaha T9.9 on an adjustable Garelick outboard (71091) and have been sailing the boat this way all year. I have been satisfied with the performance of this setup (especially docking single handed), but have realistically priced the boat far below the current BUC value of $17,000 to give the next buyer the option to bring the diesel back online. While the engine ran fine, it was still a 36 year old raw water cooled engine. I'd install a new Beta Marine 16-20hp instead and go cruising worry free. Or, pocket the savings, pull and sell the diesel for some cash, and dramatically increase storage space.
The boat may remain in the current slip if needed while plans are arranged. I will share a recent insurance survey with anybody interested. Many of the problems noted have been addressed. The boat is currently insured with BoatUS.
Overall, I've enjoyed this boat very much and would keep her if not for moving in the near future. The boat is great as it is right now for day sails, weekending, and even a trip down to the Bahamas. It'll need some work in order to take more adventurous trips, but is by no means beyond redemption. I'd like to see it go to someone who has time to make her special.
