1986 Hunter 23 Wing Keel Sailboat. The Hunter 23 is a twenty three-foot sloop, which weighs about 2450 lbs empty. Total trailering weight is around 4500 lbs., which allows many SUV's to pull it. It has an eight-foot beam and a mast height of about thirty-three feet. The boat has a fixed wing keel which draws about 2' 3". This model was produced from approximately 1985 to 1992. It evolved from the Hunter 22 and was replaced by the 23.5 in the Hunter line up. The boats varied very little by the year produced with the exception that the earliest boats had an un-ballasted swing keel which deployed below the fixed wing keel. This particular boat has the wing keel which is ideal for the shallow lakes in central Ohio, as well as making for an easy to trailer boat. I preferred this boat to similar boats such as the Catalina and O'day because of the extensive use of teak in the cabin. The joinery in the cabin creates a very inviting atmosphere instead of the starkness of white gelcoat that is present in most of the small production cruisers. Overall it is in very good condition for a boat of its age. No water damage is noted and the gelcoat is in good shape. I no longer have time to use this boat, and it has not been launched for the 2011 season, although I did have it in for the 2010 season. I used this boat extensively during the first two years in lake Erie, and Lake Huron, and the Florida Keys. It will be sad to see her go, but hopefully the new owner can put her to use. There have been a number of updates to this boat over the course of the three years I have owned it:
Mainsail, Brand new Doyle 2 full length battens, 2 partial length battens, with two reef points, purchased June 2010, with less than two weeks of use. It is very crisp and has years of life left in it. This was a $1,400 sail when purchased.
Halyards, new main, jib, topping lift halyards in August of 2010.
Tires for trailer, new in August of 2008, trailer specific tires in load range D. Trailer performs much better with the stiffer sidewall of "D" tires.
Bearings on trailer, bearings replaced with new units (not refurbished) in July of 2009. New bearing buddies installed at that time
New rollers on trailer, new bunks and carpet in July of 2009.
Larger Group 27 battery relocated to cabin to aid in weight distribution.
Rudder housing reinforced (cracks along the side are a common problem so I had a welder fabricate gussets for the rudder housing).
Other equipment:
150% Genoa
110 Jib
All cushions in cabin in good shape, there is wear on the salon cushions.
Danforth anchor and rode.
All lines led to cockpit for easy singlehanding and safety.
Adjustable auxiliary motor mount.
Alcohol stove and slide out galley.
Mast raising system.
sail bags and sailcover.
fenders
Boom tent/awning
Tiller extension
Spinnaker pole
1990 Johnson 9.9 2 cycle Long Shaft. Lower unit oil drained and refilled/carburetor rebuilt/new plugs August 2010.
