Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender, 1981
The Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender, "America's littlest Yacht", is one of the most popular sailboats ever built and continues to be. I can personally attest that the Typhoon is a joy to sail for beginner and expert alike. It is one of the best, small boats I have ever sailed.
The timeless Carl Alberg design is the reason. The Typhoon's "full keel", with 900 Ibs. of molded-in ballast gives the Typhoon the feel of a larger boat, with the steadiness and stability not found in many larger designs.
The stability is amazing to experience. Very responsive at the helm. "She does what you want, when you want." This is an uncomplicated boat.
The Weekender sports a huge, comfortable 6 foot cockpit that is self-bailing. "You sit in her, not on her." Roller reefing and internal halyards leading to the cockpit combine for easy handling whether sailing with a crew or single-handed.
Below decks, the cuddy cabin contains forward V-berths, 2 quarter berths, and an area for a marine head or portable ice chest, plus a surprising amount of storage space for a boat of this size.
This particular example is a 1981 that is in exceptional condition. All original and need no restoration what-so-ever. No blisters, soft spots. Minimal dock scars that could easily be repaired by the hobbyist. No issues with deck stepped mast compressing the roof of the cabin. Bright work needs nothing. This boat is solid.
Search the internet to find your comp's. You will learn that this boat, in similar condition, with motor and trailer is priced in the $12,000 to $18,000 range.
