Pearson 424 Ketch, 1980
"Shay"
Offered for Sale by Second Owner: 1980 Pearson 424 Ketch "Shay" Hull #90.
Shay is a classic Pearson yacht in exceptional condition now offered for sale by its second owner of 13 years. Her teak trim is pristine, maintained in excellent condition with partial Sunbrella covers, awnings and loving care. Her hull sports original gelcoat. All port lights and hatches have been replaced with premium stainless steel ABI and Bomar units. Her bow features include a Schaefer system 3000 furling system with a Macksail genoa, dual anchors with washdown, and a powerful Simpson-Lawrence vertical drum electric windlass.
Her battslide main sail easily stows in a totally enclosed lazy-jacks (a one-person operation). Her cockpit is fully protected with dodger and bimini top. Shay features custom dinghy davits and satellite-tv. Her cockpit sports a beautiful folding teak table and one-of-a-kind stained glass companionway doors (generating many dockside compliments).
Her good looks are equaled by outstanding sailing performance. Shay was completely re-rigged with new chain plates, standing rigging (Stalok), and a new aluminum main mast step. She sails exceptionally well-balanced with both light crew and light air using her 150% genoa and mizzen sail. Downwind runs are powered by a beautiful asymmetrical spinnaker. In heavy weather Shay is solid, balanced and stable utilizing her extra 80% genoa and mizzen.
Under power she cruises at a quiet 1800 rpm, makes 7 knots, and uses about 1 gallon/hour. She can be steered by her Autohelm ST-7000 linear drive autopilot linked to windvane output or a notebook computer. Shay's owner has complete service records and receipts dating back to her original launch. With 13 years experience, he has developed a forward maintenance schedule designed to prevent problems.
Shay has had major mechanical refits to its engine and running gear, including a new fuel tank and a RV-28 Walter V-drive. Multiple systems protect her operation, including large Racor 500's for clean fuel, cockpit vacuum gauges, 5 bilge pumps with emergency alarms, and electronic monitoring of both engine and generator raw water pumps. Below decks, all thru hull seacocks and waterline deck drains were replaced with top-quality bronze units. She has an intruder alarm that activates a mast-top strobe and loud siren. The owner has a garage full of spare parts for most of her major systems.
Shay's owner has spared no expense for below deck function and appeal. Her cabin sole has been replaced with exquisite teak flooring. New Ultra-suede upholstery and many custom features appoint the cabin. The galley sports a completely rebuilt super-insulated refrigerator/freezer, a whole boat water filter system, and an additional .1 micron ultrapure drinking water filter. A Village Marine water maker adds 5 gal per hour to her 150 gallon fresh water tanks.
The three cabins are cooled by a multiple outlet central a/c system driven by a 5 KW Northern Lights diesel generator. A 2.5 kw inverter provides quiet ac power.
Shay is offered with her 2009 AB hard bottom dinghy, a 15 hp 2-cycle Johnson outboard, and a 4 hp self-contained Suzuki outboard. She has multiple safety items, including a 6-person Viking offshore liferaft. She's fully appointed and ready to cruise. Full equipment list is available.
Shay is currently at her home port behind the owner's home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Asking $89500, significantly less if direct purchase without broker.
