Macgregor Venture 17, 1973

17' MacGregor, fiberglass, built 1973. Hull no. MACA14579573. Bought by current owner in 1993. Arkansas registration expires Oct. 2018. Has only been in fresh water since 1993 and probably for at least a decade before that. Hull is in good shape, gelcoat fine, a bit of "dock rash."

  • Iron swing keel is raised and lowered by a hand powered winch mounted to the bottom of the thwart at the forward end of the cockpit - fully raised about 18' remains exposed, fully lowered about 4.5' is exposed. Cable from swing keel to winch was replaced in 1993.
  • Main mast (aluminum) can be raised and lowered (by one person although easier with two) with the forestay and side stays all still attached. Takes about 30 minutes to fully rig, bend on sails, and launch. Can be launched at a ramp single-handed but easier with two people.
  • Boom (aluminum) for main sail is detachable but is fixed in place when mounted.
  • Detachable wooden kick-up rudder mounts on two gudgeons, and has attached wooden tiller with pivoting wooden tiller extension that enables steering while seated on the thwart with lower body in the cabin.
  • Drop-down motor mount (aluminum) on the stern on the port side. Previous owner used a 6hp outboard engine.
  • Access to cabin is covered by 2 fiberglass panels, a removable sliding vertical panel that inserts into wooden grooves on each side of the doorway, and a roof cover that cannot be taken out that slides forward and back also in wooden grooves.
  • Rubber dorade vent fits into hole cut into the foredeck, with a disk that seats in the hole when the vent is not in use. Using the double ended snap hook to attach the tack of the foresail raises the foot of the sail to clear the vent hood when under sail.
  • Four step folding boarding ladder (aluminum) with mounts on deck on both starboard and port sides of cabin. Mounts are reinforced below deck with oak boards.
  • Red cylindrical mushroom anchor with grounding chain and 50plus feet of line on a metal spool.
  • Cloth bag with spare tack pins, nuts, bolts, etc. for mast and boom fittings, small tools, and a small air horn for emergency signaling.

    Sails

  • Main with sheet, new when boat was purchased in 1993.
  • Genoa 150% with sheet, new when boat was purchased in 1993.
  • Jib with sheets, probably original to boat, now used only in heavy winds.
  • Boom vang with multiple sheaves for use when running downwind.
  • Main halyard new in 2013. Foresail halyard replaced with shortened old main halyard 2013. Topping lift new in 2013.

    Transporting the boat

  • Two-wheeled trailer (identification no. L058168) built for this boat, with extended tongue, spare tire mounted to a frame on the tongue, and added fiberglass guide poles on port and starboard to help get the boat back onto the trailer.
  • Hitch requires a 2" trailer ball.
  • When fully loaded tongue weight is about 75 pounds.
  • Mounted to the tongue is a Fulton swiveling jack with wheel that serves as a jack to raise and lower the tongue, and for support when trailer is not hitched to a vehicle.
  • Trailer is in good shape and all wiring works, though it could use repainting.
  • Wood cradle with Y at top that mounts on rudder gudgeons to support main mast when towing trailer and rudder is dismounted.
  • Wood cradle arrangement to support mast when rudder is mounted, consisting of an X whose feet sit on the cockpit bench seats at the aft end of the cockpit, with a detachable board fastened at one end to the middle of the X and the other end notched to fit winch thwart at forward end of cockpit. The notched end has a hole and rope to tie to thwart. The lower part of the X is secured with shock cords to stern fittings. A light line run over the top of the laid-down mast is secured to cleats on both sides of the cockpit coaming.
  • Wood cradle that fits over the forward cleat with tie line to carry the lower end of the mast when laid down.

    Power assist

  • MotorGuide brand trolling motor with manual, Model ET 44 with 44 pounds of thrust, serial no. 12900377. 12 volts. Bought about 1998.
  • Wood frame for supporting trolling motor upright when not mounted on boat.
  • Everstart deep cycle trolling 12 volt battery, bought 2005. Still takes a charge but probably should be replaced.
  • Oar lock socket mounts with detachable oar locks on both port and starboard coaming of cockpit, backed up by oak boards under the deck.
  • Two 8' oars with extensions to blades to reach 10’. Boat can be rowed easily except against a strong wind.

    In the cabin

  • 4 berth cushions, one mostly rectangular for each quarter berth and two triangular that make up the V berth. Foam covered with blue waterproof fabric.
  • Interior could use repainting but useable.
  • 1 fire extinguisher, mounted to mast support post in cabin.
  • 2 seat cushions with loop handles to supplement life-preservers.
  • 4 hanging nets for miscellaneous gear.

  • Additional lines
  • Set of heavy bow and stern lines with snap hooks for attaching to boat.
  • Set of 3 heavy dock lines for mooring fore and aft to dock.
  • Set of light lines to quickly fasten and unfasten main sail to boom when sail is down.
  • Set of light lines to loop over guide poles mounted to trailer to insure boat is centered on trailer so swing keel will rest in its cradle when lowered.
  • Set of light lines to fasten tops of guide poles together when trailer is towed so poles don’t sway.
  • 1 bag of miscellaneous heavy lines.
  • 1 bag of miscellaneous shock cord.

    Other

  • Boat is located in Dardanelle, Arkansas. Has stayed on trailer since 1993 when not in use as a day sailor.
