Cal 36, 1965

  • Hull: #6
  • Location: La Salle, MI

A classic Cal 36 designed in the spirit of the famous Cal 40.

  • This hull #6 is still solid and sails wonderfully.
  • Just hauled for winter and includes winter storage on her included cradle.
  • Original Atomic 4 with an upgraded electronic distributor runs great.
  • All sails included (2 mains, 1 furling headsail with UV fabric, different size headsails without UV fabric).
  • Whisker pole, spinnaker pole, all stainless standing rigging in good condition, could use new main sheet and jib sheets but they still work.
  • A pure joy to sail.
  • Cosmetically not the best - waiting for someone with more time than we have.

    Included bits:

  • Older Horizon masthead wind vane functions but the display does not.
  • Older tiller Autohelm 2000 (pre-SeaTalk) is included and works great when single handing or on a longer cruise.
  • Older Horizon speed and depth not working.
  • New Raymarine i70s Speed/Depth/Temp included, installed and work great.
  • New Raymarine masthead wind vane not yet installed.
  • Ice box converted to refrigerator but it does not get cold (old) and likely has leaked its refrigerant.
  • Fuel based heater, stove and oven onboard but fuel types unknown as we’ve never used them.
  • Harken headsail furler in great condition
  • Swim ladder
  • 20 gallon potable water tank
  • Martec folding prop
  • Whisker pole
  • Spinnaker pole
  • Head (slow leaking joker valve - rarely used)
  • Cradle
  • “Sundameter” low speed knot meter (condition unknown, very rare piece of equipment, not sure how it works).
  • Danforth anchor with a lot of line—not measured but must be a couple hundred feet.
  • Life jackets
  • West Marine bosuns chair

Mahogany everywhere below deck, teak above deck. Deck stepped mast, inboard rigging for lots of deck room. Head is older and has a slow leak but is a very nice unit. 20 gallon potable water tank. Roller reefing boom (about 1/3 of main sail area) but is currently configured for slab reefing. VC-17 bottom coat just this past season (2018).

No apparent signs of blistering or any other major defects. Could use a good sanding/buffing and a very thorough cleaning. Sailed more than cleaned! Port lights open and some still have their removable screens. Not in perfect condition but a wonderful old boat to sail. I would classify as a fixer-upper cosmetically but sails perfectly.

Sailed almost exclusively in the Great Lakes.

  • Draft: 5’7”
  • Displacement: 11200lbs
  • Ballast 4500lbs
  • Length: 35’6”
  • Sail area: 600sqft
  • Beam: 10’4”
