Our beloved Felina, a 1979 Herreshoff America 18 catboat that has been in my family longer than I’ve been alive, is up for sale and ready for a new home. We have simply outgrown her space with two adults, a kid, and a dog, as we are ready for longer and further adventures out in the islands. So we have bought a larger boat and we can’t stand to see this beauty just sit in the driveway for another season.
She had only felt freshwater up until three years ago when we brought her to Bellingham, and we had one glorious season with her in the water. She’s perfect for daysailing, dropping crabpots, and even overnights and weekends if you’re into simplicity. Her trailer is in good shape with new tires, so you can save on storage/moorage and trailer her to destinations abroad. Her swing keel allows you to sneak into shallow anchorages while the big boats are stuck out in the deep.
On the subject of simplicity, that is the beauty of the catboat. A single stay for rigging, a single sail, and minimal running lines make sailing her a breeze. She's easy to singlehand sail or for the beginner to learn on. For the frugal minded sailors, your maintenance costs are a fraction of what they would be with more extensive rigging layouts. Tabernacle mast makes raising and lower simple (we did it easily with two people, but solo is probably doable).
We’ve made numerous upgrades in the past few years including:
NEW Tohatsu 6HP outboard (2017, probably 5 total hours on her at this point)
New reef (2 reefs total) installed in the sail
New Claw anchor and chain
New depth sounder
New battery monitor
New bottom paint (2017—but only 4 months worth of use in the water, much life left!)
Improvements still needed (but none that prevent her from going in the water today and sailing just fine):
Original rudder has cracking fiberglass, but is still totally functional (we used it for an entire season). I’ve fabricated a new rudder (marine grade Meranti plywood and fiberglass) that is almost complete...it just needs final fairing, gelcoat, and hardware installation.
Sails (2 total) are original-totally functional, just far from new.
