Terrapin is the only completed CLC “Autumn Leaves” kit. The boat was built with all materials provided by Chesapeake Light Craft, including the pre-cut ply okoume panels, dimensional wood, sitka spruce spar kit and fiberglass and epoxy. The sails were made by Douglas Fowler. The boat is the green one featured on CLC’s website. This boat carries the optional balanced lug main, which was designed by Harris at the builder’s request.
Terrapin was awarded a first place ribbon at the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival in 2019 and a Best in Show at the Big Little Boat Festival in 2023. She was completed in 2019 with quality materials throughout and has been well maintained and always stored indoors.
Because this boat was built from the factory kit it is registered as a commercially built boat and carries a CLC issued HIN. As per factory specs, it carries more than enough flotation to prevent sinking in the event of a major mishap.
The design is ideal for the solo sailor who wants to explore shallow and narrow waterways under sail. She draws just 8” with the boards up and tacks with complete reliability in all conditions. Ballasted with 625 pounds of lead, the yawl is extremely stable and highly forgiving.
Auxiliary power is by a pair of 9 1/2-foot oars, used standing and facing forward, or the electric auxiliary. On the wind, she will sail herself in most conditions.
The cabin has dedicated stowage for food, portable head, trash and other essentials. The galley is rigged to use a JetBoil or similar stove. There is also generous stowage space under the berth flat and below the cockpit sole.
The boat is easy to launch and retrieve single-handed. Towing weight is about 2,200 pounds.
